Understanding the 18650 Format

The 18650 is a cylindrical lithium-ion battery cell approximately sixty-five millimetres long and eighteen millimetres in diameter. The name is simply a descriptor of the dimensions. These cells are used in a vast range of electronics beyond vaping, including laptop batteries, power banks, and electric vehicles, which means they are well-understood and extensively tested.

For vaping purposes, two specifications matter most: capacity, measured in milliampere-hours, which determines how long the battery lasts between charges; and continuous discharge rating, measured in amps, which determines how much current the cell can safely provide. Using a battery with an insufficient discharge rating for the wattage you are running is one of the leading causes of battery stress and failure.

Buying from Reputable Sources

The lithium-ion battery market is plagued with counterfeits, and vaping batteries are no exception. Fake batteries often claim unrealistically high capacity figures and inflated discharge ratings that they cannot actually deliver. These cells may perform adequately under light use but can fail dangerously under the demands of high-wattage vaping.

Most regulated box mods include a low battery warning and will shut off before the battery reaches a critically low level. Pay attention to these warnings and recharge your batteries promptly rather than squeezing out the last few minutes of use.

Physical Handling and Storage

Lithium-ion cells are sensitive to physical damage. A dented, punctured, or crushed cell should never be used and should be safely disposed of rather than charged or continued in service. Even damage that appears superficial can compromise the internal separator between the anode and cathode, creating conditions for a short circuit.

Store spare batteries in a purpose-made battery case rather than loose in a pocket, bag, or drawer. Loose batteries that come into contact with metal objects such as coins or keys can short circuit, generating heat rapidly. Battery cases are inexpensive and available at any specialist vape shop — there is no good reason not to use one.

Keep batteries away from extreme temperatures. High heat accelerates chemical degradation and increases failure risk; freezing temperatures reduce capacity and can cause internal condensation on warming. Room temperature, in a cool dry place, is ideal for storage.

Recognising a Failing Battery

Learn to identify the signs that a battery is reaching the end of its useful life or has been compromised. Reduced capacity — noticeably shorter sessions between charges — is a normal sign of ageing but can also indicate damage. A battery that becomes very hot during normal charging or use is a warning sign. A cell that appears swollen or whose wrapper is torn or damaged should be retired immediately.

The wrapper on a battery cell is not just cosmetic — it provides electrical insulation. A torn wrapper can create contact between the cell and the metal casing of your device, potentially causing a short circuit. Rewrapping kits are available, but if you are not confident doing this correctly, it is safer to dispose of the cell and replace it.

Safe Disposal

Lithium-ion batteries must never be placed in household waste or general recycling. Most electronics retailers, including vape shops and supermarkets, have battery collection points for safe disposal. Local authority recycling centres in Ireland also accept batteries. Proper disposal ensures the materials are handled safely and that recoverable components are recycled appropriately.
